How To Get Better Results In Your Biz With Less Effort

I’ve been so. freaking. tired. lately. Mostly because I’ve been staying up past my bedtime to watch Tidying Up on Netflix (and I’ve been driving my husband nuts Marie Kondo-ing everything I can get my hands on.) So, my house is getting more organized but something’s in the air because I’ve been doing a little tidying in the ways I’ve been operating in life too. Let me explain…

About a month ago, I decided to get back on the exercise train again after not working out for a good 6 months. During that time, I would have days when I felt able to hit the gym, so I’d go to a strength training or kickboxing class, get a little overzealous (read: do more than I could handle) and quit. I’d get so mad at myself and think, why are you so good at keeping promises to everyone but YOU?

Well, that’s a big philosophical question I don’t have the answer to. But what I know for sure is I have a tendency to go full throttle with things and at certain times, that tendency has served me well. At other times, it’s earned me a one-way ticket to burnout land because this girl cannot sustain full throttle.

Clearly all-or-nothing hasn’t been working for me, so I decided to try something new (and I promise I’ll bring this back to business, so stay with me!) I decided on a MINIMUM amount of exercise I could commit to and legit show up for. Not what I used to do, not what I “should” do; what I was willing to do at the present moment. For me, that was 20 min, 3 times a week. I promised myself I would get on my Peloton bike 20 min, 3 times a week for a month and then I’d make a new promise. I’m proud to say that 2 days ago, I DID IT! I showed up and did what I said I was going to do for a full month and practiced keeping my word to ME. See:

It kinda got me thinking that if I could succeed by doing the minimum at exercise, what about in my business? What about in YOUR business?

As entrepreneurs, we tend to give ourselves impossible To-Do Lists, right? We swear we’re going to create epic blog posts jam-packed with value every MWF, dazzle our newsletter subscribers with weekly content they can’t get anywhere else, and show up on ALL social media platforms on the daily to win friends and influence people…and maybe we even succeed for a week or two (for me it’s more like a day or two.) But we can’t sustain that kind of all-out effort over the long haul.

So, we start showing up sporadically and inconsistently in our businesses, which we all know is a BIG no-no if the goal is to grow baby, grow. So, my question to you is, what would happen if you did the minimum?

What if instead of committing yourself to 3 blog post per week, you set aside time for 1? What if instead of weekly newsletters you wrote to your subscribers monthly? And WHAT IF instead of feeling like you had to waste hours of your day on every single media platform ever launched, you picked 1-2 that you actually liked spending time on???

I can hear the disgruntled “but that’s not enough” before it comes out of your mouth, friend! That’s always been my mantra too, but guess what? Done is always better than perfect and if you’re anything like me, trying to do all the things has led you to do far fewer of the things than you’d like. Let’s not let the best be the enemy of the good, shall we (did I get that saying right?)

We’ve got this!
