Private Social Media Accounts Are Bad For Business

Social media is a must for your business.

You already know that having a social media presence is critical to your business marketing strategy. It’s one of the most effective ways to get the word out about what you do, establish relationships with your audience, and build brand loyalty. But none of that can happen if the public doesn’t have access to your social accounts. Am I right?

Making your accounts private will keep the trolls (and everyone else) away.

When I work with clients to help them curate social media content, I’m always astonished at how many of them have private Instagram and Twitter accounts or have the comments and tagging options on their Facebook pages turned off. The number one reason? They want to avoid trolls and spammy comments.

I get it! Spam sucks, and trolls are the worst. But the truth is, most legit followers won’t go through the extra step of requesting to follow you and then wait around to see what you have to offer. They’re going to scroll on by, click on your competition’s public account (because they can see what kind of content they’re sharing without the extra click) and your opportunity to connect with them will be GONE.

The bottom line:

The bottom line is this: The whole reason you spend time and money to create content for your social media is to engage with your audience. By making your accounts public, you make it easy for potential clients and customers to follow you and see how awesome you are! And that’s 100% worth the possibility of having to delete a spammy comment or block a troll or two, wouldn’t you say?
